Visit the Hansen family’s small apartment and stroll through the shopping street on the first floor of our permanent 1950s exhibition. Here, the diligent housewife has decorated for Christmas following the trends of the time. Creativity and reuse were necessary due to rationing, shortages, and high unemployment following World War II. While the youngest family members could spend hours daydreaming over the annual Christmas catalog from Daells Varehus, the gifts under the Christmas tree were homemade — as were the decorations. The little ones can explore the Christmas decorations in the shopping street with an activity booklet and earn a small prize at the Coffee Shop. ♦️ Make your own yarn elf For many working-class families, most Christmas decorations were homemade. Fortunately, yarn and fabric scraps go a long way. You can follow in the footsteps of working-class children and make your own yarn elf. The yarn elf workshop is available in the Coffee Shop or the Banquet Hall throughout the Christmas season. ♦️ Mulled wine & traditional danish”aebleskiver” in the Coffee Shop Enjoy a cup of hot cocoa or a cup of coffee with Rich’s in the 50’s Coffee Shop, and let yourself be tempted by the Christmas delicacies – whether you’re in the mood for biscuit cake or small, crispy Christmas cookies. Or perhaps a delicious mulled wine with warm traditional danish “aebleskiver”? ♦️ Do your Christmas shopping in the museum shop Out of Christmas gift ideas? Then visit the museum shop and get inspired for the personalized Christmas gift. Perhaps a sustainable shopping bag from our special exhibition WOMEN’S LIVES, a beautiful poster, a great book, jewelry, household items, or elegant Christmas decorations could catch your eye?
